If you’ve spent any time here on Board Game Grow, then you will know we have a soft spot for dexterity games. Our latest addiction has been the stupidly fun game Coconuts. Recently, I came across Shogun Showdown on Kickstarter. This unique card game combines two genres I really enjoy. Trick taking games and dexterity games. The game play is simple enough. Players try to win certain cards during the game (trick taking), and then at the end of the round, they do some card flinging to attack the winner (not actually at the person). Add in some fantastic Japanese style artwork and Shogun Showdown is a winner in my book.
From the Kickstarter Page:
Shogun Showdown is a trick taking game that puts a whole new spin on the genre with a dexterity element. In between rounds of card play (similar to Rook or Euchre), players take turns flicking cards at the winner’s temple. Points are awarded on both card play and card flicking.
By adding card throwing into the mix, Shogun Showdown is a nice break from conventional games that have you sitting for long periods of time.
In Shogun Showdown, players take turns playing cards. Once all cards are played, the player who holds the most temple cards becomes the defending shogun and earns 1 point. The defending Shogun places their temple at the end of the table and that’s when the real fun begins. All players throw their shuriken cards at the temple trying to knock it over. If the temple survives, the defender gets another point. If an attacking shogun knocks it down then they get a point. The first player to 4 points wins!
I think the combination of rules here is really clever and I’m looking forward to giving this one a try. If you’d like to become a backer, a $16 pledge will get you a copy of the game, while a $21 pledge will also get you access to any stretch goals. Shogun Showdown is scheduled to be in backers hands in November of 2014 and you have until Friday, June 27th to become a backer. So head over today and check it out.
